The GP Guidance program is designed to assist children in reaching their full potential in our school and as members of our community. The program goal is to help students learn more efficiently and achieve success in their learning experiences. The Guidance Counselor at GP works with students, parents, teachers, support staff and community to meet the needs of the students.

The Guidance program offers individual, small group and classroom support group activities. Individual and small group sessions cover a wide variety of topics including:

Banana Splits (divorced/separated families)
Newcomer's lunch
Friendship skills group
CAPS (learning about substance abuse prevention)

Assertiveness skills, self-esteem boosters, behavior management issues and career awareness are also addressed. The activities include discussions, art projects, games and reading.

Classroom lessons are offered on many topics. Self esteem, communication skills, positive thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution, child abuse prevention, substance abuse prevention and study skill lessons are presented throughout the year. The Guidance program also coordinates the Child Study Team, which evaluates concerns presented by classroom teachers and parents about students. The Counselor is able to provide information on many valuable community resources for families in need of assistance.
