Kindergarten Curriculum
Math
Our math program is
Scott-Foresman-Addison Wesley Kindergarten math and Math Their
Way. During the course of the year we will use a variety of
manipulatives and stories to cover the following topics: classification
and position, sorting and graphing, exploring patterns, exploring
numbers 0 - 10, measurement, solids, shapes, number sense, time and
money, and simple addition and subtraction.
Reading:
We use a variety of programs and teacher-made materials. This
includes, but is not limited to, the Houghton-Mifflin Reading series,
Guided Reading, The Early Literacy Profile (assessment), literature
books, listening centers, choral reading, big books, and read
alouds. At the kindergarten level we stress letter recognition
(uppercase and lowercase), sound-symbol awareness (sounds associated
with a particular letter), phonemic awareness (recognition pf
particular sounds in language), and sight word recognition.
We have a list of twenty sight words that we focus on. They
are: and, the, a, to, in, is, it, he, at, I, my, we, can, an, do,
up, she, so, like, and see. Recognizing words within a sentence
and basic sentence construction will be practiced also.
Writing
We use the Zaner-Bloser writing program in kindergarten.
Letter chants are used to introduce and reinforce the correct formation
of all 26 letters. These skills are also practiced in our reading
program. Many activites (playdough, lacing beads, puzzles, blocks
etc.) are offered to strengthen fine motor skills.
Health/Science
For health, we will follow the "Growing Healthy"
curriculum. In this program we cover growth and development,
mental/emotional health, personal health, family life, nutrition,
safety, and taking care of our bodies. In science we cover a
variety of topics throughout the year such as: magnets, butterfly life
cycles, plants, five senses, season, weather, insects, dinosaurs, and
animals.
Social Studies
We discuss and complete various projects pertaining to community
awareness, community helpers, family, holiday celebrations, and
friends. We also work in conjunction with the Hartwick College
Service Learning Project to complete one or two community service
projects a year to benefit our local hospitals, families, and SPCA's.
The curriculum is also supported by field trips, guest speakers, play,
arts & crafts, cooking, music, and expressive arts.
