TITLE I, which is part of the No Child Left Behind Act 0f 2001, is a federally funded program designed to help students develop the skills they need to successfully meet the State’s challenging academic achievement standards. Funds from the Federal government are allocated to the states, which in turn, distribute money to local districts. The amount is based on the number of children below a set income level. Services, however, are provided to students based on educational needs, not income levels. Title I services are provided to all three elementary schools in the Oneonta City School District.
AIS, or ACADEMIC INTERVENTION SERVICES, is a State-mandated program designed to help students achieve New York State learning standards in English language arts and math in grades K-12, and science and social studies in grades 4-12. While districts are required to provide AIS to students who have failed, or are at risk of failing the State assessments, they do not receive extra funding for those services.
All of the schools in the Oneonta District provide AIS. In the elementary buildings, Title I funds help support the academic intervention programs, while in the Middle and High Schools academic assistance falls under the State-mandated AIS program, and is funded with local monies.
