Scholar, Teacher Honored At Program
Teacher and student pose with award plaqueOHS valedictorian Aben Carrington and English teacher Melissa Brockway were honored at the 2019 Scholar Recognition program on May 8 at SUNY Oneonta.
The annual program recognizes outstanding scholastic achievement by members of the graduating classes of local schools. It also recognizes a teacher nominated by each student for having a significant influence on their education.
Students are chosen on the basis of scholarship, as well as leadership and service to school or community.
Mrs. Brockway wrote of Aben that he is “driven, intelligent, humorous and unassuming,” and that he “sets high standards for himself and never shies away from a challenge.” Mrs. Brockway also noted that Aben has pursued a rigorous course of study throughout high school and has excelled academically.
Aben wrote that Mrs. Brockway’s Advanced English class “had more of an impact on me than any other class I’ve taken.” He wrote that “Mrs. Brockway taught me to take pride in my work, and in difficult times encouraged me to be the best student I could possibly be.”
