The Oneonta City School District is proud to share that our Oneonta Middle School 6th grade band and chorus were invited to perform as part of the New York State School Music Association Music in Our Schools Month celebration. The performance took place in the South Concourse of the New York State Capitol, an unforgettable setting for our young musicians.
The chorus, directed by Kimberly Collison and accompanied by Jennifer White, opened the program with Bonjour Paris, followed by I Sing Because I’m Happy and Go the Distance. From the very first note, their voices echoed throughout the concourse, filling the space with a sound that was both powerful and beautifully unified. It was immediately clear that this was a special group of students, and they carried themselves with a confidence and joy that made the moment even more meaningful.
Before the performance began, Kimberly Philby, vocal music teacher at Greater Plains and Riverside, reflected on the significance of the invitation, noting just how meaningful it is for students to be selected to perform at this level and how moments like this speak to the strength of the district’s music program.
Following the chorus, Mrs. Collison was presented with a commemorative plaque by Scott Andrews, NYSSMA MIOSM Chairperson, recognizing their participation in this statewide celebration.
The band, under the direction of Laura Wahlberg, followed with Majestic March, Castle Hill Overture, and Pixels. Their performance brought a rich, full sound to the concourse, showcasing both their musical growth and the strength of the ensemble. The energy they brought rounded out the program in a way that left a lasting impression.
Mrs. Wahlberg was also presented with a plaque by Mr. Andrews in recognition of the band’s performance.
The audience included many supportive family members, along with Principal Tom Molle, Superintendent Thomas Brindley, and Assemblyman Brian Miller, all there to celebrate this special moment.
Reflecting on the performance, Superintendent Brindley shared, “Moments like this remind us what is possible when students are supported, challenged, and inspired. What these students accomplished today goes beyond a performance. It reflects commitment, pride, and the kind of excellence that defines our school community. We are incredibly proud of them.”
From beginning to end, this was a truly special experience. Our students represented Oneonta Middle School, the Oneonta City School District, and our entire community with pride, and we cannot wait to watch them continue to grow and flourish in their musical talents.
