The Oneonta City School District is moving full steam ahead with Phase Two of its 2023 Capital Project, and signs of progress are visible across every campus. From roofs and parking lots to technology and safety systems, this work represents an investment in the future of Oneonta students. The project will span multiple years, with some renovations continuing into the 2026–27 school year, but its impact is already taking shape.
High School and Middle School
On the 130 East Street campus, major improvements are underway. Roof replacements continue, with the High School gym roof now complete and the science wing area finished as well. Crews are also installing a new integrated safety and communication system that combines public address, fire alarms, clocks, and digital message boards into one seamless network. The High School is the first to receive this upgrade, with other schools scheduled to follow.
In addition, entrances and walkways, boiler line replacement and loading dock reconstruction are in progress, ensuring these critical systems remain safe and efficient. Construction of a new Gray Barn is also scheduled for late summer, with building materials already arriving on site. This new facility will strengthen district operations and help keep our schools running smoothly and looking beautiful.
Elementary Schools
Each elementary campus is also seeing meaningful updates. At Valleyview Elementary, a brand new parking lot and playground upgrades are complete, and the roof replacement is now finished as well, ensuring classrooms are protected for years to come. Riverside Elementary has already received a new parking lot and its basketball court and sidewalk repairs are complete. Both Riverside and Greater Plains are receiving exterior updates as their original board and batten siding is replaced, giving the buildings a fresh look while ensuring long term strength.
Looking ahead, both Riverside and Greater Plains will also see brand new libraries next summer. These spaces will give students bright, modern environments for reading, research, and discovery.
Transportation and Support Facilities
The district’s transportation hub is not being left behind. The bus garage will undergo a floor drain replacement and heating system upgrade in 2025, ensuring safe and efficient operations that directly support student transportation every day.
Athletics and Activities
The capital project also brings significant improvements to student activity spaces. With the High School gym roof completed, temporary protections have been removed. In the pool, wiring and conduit for new lighting have been installed, with installation of new fixtures expected this fall. Brighter, safer environments support student athletes as they train, compete, and grow.
What’s Ahead
One of the most anticipated pieces of the project is the updated state of the art auditorium at the High School. Groundbreaking for this project will begin the day after graduation this year. Once complete, the auditorium will provide a professional stage for concerts, plays, assemblies, and celebrations of student achievement. Combined with the new libraries at Riverside and Greater Plains, it represents a strong investment in academics, the arts, and the experiences that shape the lives of students.
A Commitment to Safety and Shared Effort
Safety remains the district’s number one priority, and every aspect of this project reflects that focus. From stronger systems and safer entrances to modernized learning spaces and activity areas, the work is centered on creating secure environments where students can grow and succeed.
The progress seen across our campuses is the result of careful planning and oversight from Superintendent Thomas Brindley and Director of Facilities and Transportation James Hurtubise, whose leadership continues to guide this complex project. Just as important, these improvements would not be possible without the continued support of our students, families, and community members. It is through this shared commitment that Oneonta is able to invest in schools that are stronger, safer, and more inspiring. Together, the OCSD community is not only building for today, but laying a foundation that will benefit generations of Yellowjackets to come.
GO 'JACKETS!
