This week, the Oneonta City School District celebrated RIF Week with visits from Oneonta Reading Is Fundamental, a partnership that has been inspiring readers in our district since 1966.

Throughout the week, each of our elementary schools welcomed RIF volunteers for a special book distribution event. Valleyview Elementary kicked off the celebration, where every K–5 student selected two free books to take home and keep. Valleyview Library Media Specialist Mark Parmerter shared, “Each kid left with two books and a smile!”

The excitement continued at Greater Plains Elementary, where students proudly wore red for RIF Day. When asked why we wear red, one student offered the perfect answer:

“We wear red because R means read, E means every, and D means day. We wear red to remind us to read every day!”

Riverside Elementary wrapped up RIF Week with smiles all around and just as much enthusiasm for reading as the first day. Several students could be heard sharing how much they love to read, a perfect reflection of what RIF Week is all about.

We are so thankful for our longstanding partnership with Oneonta Reading Is Fundamental and the many dedicated volunteers who make these book giveaways possible. Their time and generosity ensure that every child can experience the joy of choosing new books and discovering the power of stories.

Oneonta RIF will return in May for another free book event at all of our elementary schools, continuing a tradition that has been at the heart of our community for nearly six decades — reminding us all that there’s nothing more meaningful than seeing children light up over a good book and a reason to read every day.

GO 'JACKETS!
