A Message from Superintendent Brindley: Honoring Our Veterans 🦅

On the eve of Veterans Day, we pause to honor and thank all who have served our nation in uniform. Your courage, dedication, and sacrifice protect the freedoms we hold dear.

We are especially grateful for the veterans within our Yellowjacket community, among our staff, families, and friends, whose service continues to inspire us every day. 💙🤍❤️

Dear Yellowjacket Family, On the eve of Veterans Day, I’d like to pause and reflect on the meaning behind this day of remembrance and gratitude. First observed as Armistice Day, it marked the end of fighting on the Western Front of World War I, a ceasefire that began at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month. Over time, the observance evolved to honor all who have worn our nation’s uniform in service and sacrifice. Veterans Day offers us an opportunity to share our appreciation with those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, both past and present. Unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who gave their lives in defense of our country, Veterans Day celebrates the courage, dedication, and contributions of all who have stepped forward to protect our freedoms. Here in our Yellowjacket community, we are proud to count veterans among our staff, families, and friends. Many have served quietly, without seeking recognition, yet their impact and sacrifice are woven into the fabric of our schools and community. We also recognize those with loved ones who are serving now or who have served as your support and strength are deeply valued. To all veterans within our schools and throughout Oneonta: thank you. Your service and commitment remind us of the values of duty, perseverance, and compassion that we strive to instill in our students every day. If you have the chance, please take a moment to thank a veteran tomorrow or any day, with a handshake, a few words of gratitude, or simply a moment of reflection. With appreciation… Thomas F. Brindley, Superintendent of Schools
💛 Warm Hearts, Warm Coats 💛

This week, many of our elementary students received brand new winter coats, gloves, and handmade hats thanks to the generosity of the Oneonta Rotary Club and their continued support through Operation Warm.

Each year, Rotary members raise funds to make sure children in our community stay warm all winter long, providing more than 200 coats, hats, and mittens to students at Greater Plains, Riverside, and Valleyview Elementary Schools, as well as Laurens Central School.

The handmade hats this year made it even more special — you could tell just how much love went into every single one. 🐝 GO 'JACKETS!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month—a time to highlight the importance of mental well-being for all. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 1 in 6 youth aged 6–17 experience a mental health disorder each year, and 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness annually. Throughout the month, OCSD will be sharing activities, education, and resources to support the mental health of our students, staff, and families. Our dedicated school staff support student wellness every day. This month, they’ve worked especially hard to share helpful tools and tips—resources intended not just for the students in our buildings, but for our entire school community. 💛 To kick off the month, we’re sharing Mental Health America’s “31 Tips to Boost Your Mental Health” calendar—a simple, encouraging way to prioritize your well-being one day at a time. 🧠✨ You can find the calendar in the images or by visiting: 🔗 https://mhanational.org/resources/31-tips-to-boost-your-mental-health 💚 Don’t forget to wear green this Friday in support of mental health awareness!
