This summer, Valleyview alumna Abby Zhang returned to her school in a memorable way, transforming a plain library wall into a colorful celebration of reading.
After graduating from 5th grade in June, Abby was invited to create designs for a new mural in the Valleyview library. What started as a request for a few ideas quickly turned into something bigger. “She created three different designs, and each one was so good we could not choose between them,” shared Valleyview library media specialist Mark Parmerter. “We ultimately let Abby decide which one she wanted to bring to life.”
In July, Abby dedicated a full week to painting her chosen design, carefully bringing every detail to life. The result is a vibrant, reading themed mural that will greet students with inspiration when they return this fall.
At 5th grade graduation, Abby received Mrs. Kitissou’s Art Award, and her mural now stands as a lasting gift to the Valleyview community. “We are so grateful that she chose to share her time and talents with us,” added Parmerter.
The mural is more than artwork. It is a reflection of Abby’s creativity, her dedication, and her love of learning, and it will inspire countless students for years to come. Its message, “Today a reader, tomorrow a leader,” captures Abby’s legacy perfectly, reminding all who see it that the stories we open today shape the leaders we become tomorrow. As Abby and her classmates begin their next chapter, OMS can look forward to welcoming an incoming class already leaving its mark in meaningful ways.
