Valleyview Elementary School’s fifth grade library classes enjoyed a fun and eye opening experience on the morning of Tuesday, October 21 as they took part in a live Zoom session with New York Times reporter and fact checker Linda Qiu. The virtual visit was part of the students’ Fall Media Literacy unit, led by Library Media Specialist Mark Parmerter.

Qiu, who investigates news stories for accuracy and helps distinguish fact from fiction, spoke to students about her role in journalism. She explained that much of her work mirrors that of an investigator, researching for weeks or even months, consulting multiple sources, and carefully verifying claims before an article goes to print. She also discussed the importance of responsible reporting and the critical role journalists play in today’s fast moving media landscape.

Fifth graders had the opportunity to ask questions about her job, including how she identifies misinformation, how she sees Artificial Intelligence impacting the news, and why Media Literacy matters. Their classroom activities in recent weeks have focused on identifying reliable sources, evaluating online content, and navigating an internet environment where misinformation and disinformation are increasingly common.

Qiu also shared digital citizenship tips and encouraged students to think carefully about what they see, hear, and share online, reminding them that responsible media habits are more important than ever.

Valleyview is grateful to Ms. Qiu for volunteering her time and sharing her expertise. Her visit brought real world insight into the classroom and helped empower students to become informed, thoughtful media consumers. The session was a memorable learning experience for all involved.
