One of Oneonta High School’s most beloved traditions returned today, and it was bigger and better than ever. For the third school year in a row, the History Club and Diversity Club brought the OHS community together for a Multicultural Luncheon, a food filled gathering that continues to grow in excitement and attendance each year. This luncheon is one of several multicultural events hosted throughout the school year, and each one brings something meaningful to our school community.
More than 200 students enjoyed dishes from around the world, many trying new foods for the first time. The hallway was full of laughter, curiosity, and friendly conversation as students sampled homemade dishes and restaurant favorites, all generously provided by club members, staff, and local businesses. The luncheon is offered at no cost to students, creating a welcoming space to celebrate the diverse backgrounds represented at OHS.
In the weeks leading up to the event, staff members were invited to contribute a dish or make a small voluntary donation. This year, more staff participated than ever before, which allowed organizers to purchase additional trays of food from local restaurants. StarMix provided lamb and chicken over rice with tzatziki sauce at a reduced cost, including a full tray priced as a half tray. Indian Grille offered their Chicken Korma at a generous discount. Paired with the many homemade appetizers, main dishes, breads, and desserts from students and staff, the final spread was both abundant and delicious.
A highlight of the luncheon is always the moment students, teachers, and administrators come together to serve one another. The serving line moved with ease as the room filled with smiles, conversation, and genuine appreciation for the shared experience. It is a day that reminds everyone how meaningful it is to gather around a shared table.
We offer our sincere thanks to everyone who helped make the event possible. Students and staff worked together to set up and clean up, with special appreciation for the support provided by Tina Smith’s class. Plates, napkins, and utensils were supplied through the generosity of staff members. The district is also deeply grateful to our local restaurants, whose discounted trays allowed donations to go even further.
As we head into the Thanksgiving break, today’s luncheon felt especially fitting. It brought our Yellowjacket community together in a warm and memorable way, filled with connection, generosity, and shared gratitude. We are thankful for everyone who contributed to this wonderful day.
