Laughter, stories, and shared moments filled the Bugbee Children’s Center on Wednesday, December 18, when students from the Oneonta High School Varsity Book Club and Real Readers Book Club took a walking field trip to spend time with the children.
Eighteen high school students sat alongside young learners, reading favorite books, turning pages together, and taking time to play and connect. For many of the children, it was a special morning spent with older students who modeled kindness, patience, and a genuine love of reading.
The visit brought together members of two OHS book clubs with a shared goal: encouraging literacy while building meaningful connections. The Varsity Book Club, made up of varsity athletes, and the Real Readers Book Club, composed of outstanding freshmen, both focus on inspiring younger students through positive examples.
Advisor Mrs. Nicole Gelbsman reflected on the morning, saying, “When high school students take the time to read with young children, everyone benefits—academically, socially, and emotionally.”
Looking ahead, the book clubs are excited to continue sharing their love of reading. Plans include visits to local elementary schools to read to younger Yellowjackets, as well as a trip to Barnes & Noble to celebrate literacy beyond the classroom. Through these experiences, OHS students hope to continue building connections and inspire a lifelong love of learning throughout the Oneonta community.
