OMS Clubs and Advisors

ART CLUB – Mrs. Morell, advisor

Art Club is an opportunity for students to explore personal interests in Art, exchange creative ideas, and to learn new art techniques.  Activities will include personal art creations as well as creations to enrich our school and community with our talents.  Meetings will be twice a month after school.  All creative and imaginative students grades 6 – 8 are welcome to join.


BATTLE OF THE BOOKS - Mrs. Sobers, advisor
In teams, students read a series of preselected books that are trending in the YA world! Students then engage in a competition at the end of the school year to test their knowledge. Battle of the Books is a way to encourage our young readers to challenge themselves while exploring some fantastic new books and developing leadership and team building skills.

DRAMA CLUB - Mrs. Ashforth, advisor 

OMS PRIDE (formerly Code 9) - Ms. Carl, advisor

OMS Pride aims to represent our diverse student body and/or students who identify as LGBTQ+. We work as a club to educate students and staff on new terminology and identifications; make the OMS environment more welcoming, accepting, and inclusive for all students; provide support and “safe spaces'' to students who are questioning their gender identity or sexual orientation; work in tandem with OCSD anti-harassment policies to stop bullying and “othering” of our diverse students; and develop partnerships between schools and within the community. We meet in Room 411 as announced. Please see Ms. Carl or Ms. Fuller with questions.


eSPORTS - Mrs. Ashforth and Ms. Miller, advisors

Open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders in good academic and behavioral standing interested in learning about competitive video-gaming. We will be learning about teamwork, communication, strategy, and online etiquette, alongside our gaming. The school has BOCES-provided Nintendo Switch Consoles and Alienware gaming laptops. Students ARE NOT allowed to bring their own controllers or games.


FRENCH CLUB - Mrs. Ashforth, advisor

OMS French club is open to any 6th, 7th or 8th grade student interested in learning more about the French language and the French culture.  Students do not have to take French to be in French club.  We do many cultural activities after school and learn about various cultural aspects that students vote on.   We also partake in assisting with and/or hosting school and community events to encourage cultural understanding and tolerance.


GERMAN CLUB - Mrs. Harter, advisor

German club is open to all students in grades 6-8.  We meet Wednesdays during period 6 in room 406.  German club is for students who are interested in exploring German culture beyond the classroom.  Students prepare for and participate in the International Market, play chess and other games, prepare and eat food, and celebrate German culture via various holidays and events such as National German Week, Oktoberfest and Karneval.


SPANISH CLUB - 

OMS Spanish club is open to any 6th, 7th or 8th grade student interested in learning more about the Spanish language and  Spanish culture.  Students do not have to take Spanish to be in Spanish club.   Spanish Club meets in room 405 during 6th period twice a month.  We also participate in school and community events to encourage cultural understanding and tolerance.


JAZZ ENSEMBLE- Ms. Wahlberg and Mr. Oram, advisors

OMS Jazz Band is a select group that rehearses weekly after school hours. Membership is open to any 7/8 grade band member with an interest in learning jazz.  Jazz Band performs regularly at OMS Band concerts in addition to appearances at OMS Live!. 


NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY (NJHS) - Mrs. Mummenthey, advisor

National Junior Honor Society is an international organization that recognizes 7th and 8th grade students who have shown outstanding character, leadership, service and scholarship qualities. Applicants who meet the academic qualifications are eligible to apply at the start of the second semester each year. The induction ceremony is held each Spring.  Members are required to maintain an average of 90% as well as complete a set number of community service hours each school year.  Members are also required to maintain their roles as positive leaders with good character that we expect of NJHS members.   NJHS members are often the student representatives at such events as 6th grade orientation, Open House, and parent tech night each year.


ROBOTICS CLUB Mrs. Sobers, advisor

Oneonta Middle School’s Robotics Club is an exciting extracurricular activity that offers students in grades 6 to 8 the opportunity to explore the fascinating world of robotics and technology. In these clubs, students work together to design, build, and program robots, often using kits or specialized tools. They engage in hands-on, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) learning experiences, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and teamwork. Participants learn to code, tinker with hardware, and compete in robotics challenges or competitions, all while having fun and gaining a deeper understanding of how technology impacts our world. OMS Robotics Club provides a nurturing environment for young enthusiasts to discover their passion for science and engineering and prepare them for future endeavors in the field.

OMS School Paper - Mrs. Lyall, advisor

Covering current events and happenings around the Oneonta Middle School, members of the school paper will write articles, cover sports events, conduct interviews, and contribute to an electronic and print version school paper. We strive for a minimum of 4 editions per school year. 


OMS SKI CLUB - Mr. Holleran, advisor 

The OMS Ski & Board Club takes a minimum of 5 ski trips per year to a semi-local ski mountain. Trips are generally planned for Saturday’s, but may also go on holiday breaks. Club members must purchase a pass and have their own equipment.  Transportation is provided by the school. Students in grades 6-8 with ski / board experience are eligible to join.

 

OMS STUDENT COUNCIL - Mrs. Sobers and Mrs. Ashforth, advisors

OMS Student Council Overview:

Student council is a student-based organization to help promote school spirit and leadership among students.  It is a way for students to share ideas, concerns, and interests with each other and maintain open communication between the students, teachers and Principal.

The purpose of Student Council is, but not limited to:

·         Develop positive attitudes and practice good citizenship

·         Promote harmonious relationships throughout the school

·         Maintain/Improve student/teacher relationships

·         Improve school morale and provide a forum for student expression

All students attending Oneonta Middle School who maintain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 75 or above are eligible to run for representative of their grade, students in grades 6, 7 and 8 with GPA of 75 or above are eligible to be Student Council Representatives. Students interested in an officer position must be in grade 7 or 8 are also required to maintain the passing GPA.  If appointed/elected you must be responsible and willing to work hard and promote a positive attitude. 

As Officer/Representative you are expected to speak on behalf of your peers with any concerns, issues, ideas, fundraising etc.

As members, you will be called to serve other students by representing their issues and ideas within the school and community.  Student Council will be involved in projects that may include: 

·         School improvement/beautification: clean-up, gardening, painting etc.

·         Community Service: food drives, recycling, clothing drives etc.

Student Opinion: polls, communication with classrooms, students 


OMS YEARBOOK CLUB - Mrs. Loucks, advisor

This is an afterschool club.  No skills are necessary.  You will learn how to use a camera and a computer program used to design the yearbook for OMS.  This club is open to all students grades 6-8th who are interested in developing our OMS yearbook.  Responsibilities include helping organize a fundraising dance and marketing our local community for donations.  Members are expected to participate in meetings 2 - 4  times per month afterschool as well as taking pictures at sporting and school club events and helping with fundraising events.   Each student will have to provide your own transportation to and from meetings and picture taking activities. All Creative and dedicated students are welcome.


SADD - Mrs. Day, advisor 

Is for any student in grades 6-8.  Our purpose is to educate and discuss with students the issues of underage drinking, drug use, distracted driving, and other destructive decisions that could kill young people, friends or family.  Knowing somethings do not directly impact or involve our students, they are always encouraged to pass along things discussed to friends and family.  


SPELLING BEE - Ms. Wright, advisor

The Spelling Bee is a club for any students in grades 6-8 interested in words.  Members of the club do NOT have to be a contestant in the School Spelling Bee, but they are encouraged to help with the Bee come January/February.  The club will meet after school and we will look at words games, play on words, puns, tongue twisters and other activities related to words, as well as looking at the list of words for the Spelling Bee to help expand our vocabulary!
