SENIOR SEMINAR – half year course in the fall semester, ½ credit
Senior Seminar is a course for seniors designed to assist them in a successful transition to college. Topics covered will be dependent upon the semester, but a general listing of topics to be covered is:
Possible Topics/Activities To Be Covered:
complete the Common Application
write the college essay
discuss dorm life
how to ask for a letter of recommendation
study skills (particularly, how to read those ghastly textbooks)
course selection
investigation of majors
scholarships – how to find them and how to apply for them
drinking
being responsible
financial aid
private vs. public colleges
renting an apartment off campus
the importance of meeting deadlines
campus tours of SUCO and Hartwick
whatever students need!
Speakers from area colleges, past graduates and other speakers discussing areas of student interest/need will be brought in to further explore topics.
Grading
:
Since each student in the class will be at a different place in terms of the decision-making about college, some of the class time will be spent working on independent projects. Wise use of class time is imperative. Individuals who are unable or unwilling to use class time well and who pose a disruption to other’s education will be asked to leave the class.
